In 1986, heartthrob Tom Cruise took to the sky in the blockbuster action-drama Top Gun, an okay film which is pretty much responsible for making the then young Scientologist a star. There are cliches, bad acting and a lame romantic subplot. These are all aspects that make Top Gun a truly ridiculous piece of cinematic cheese. Having said that, it is now up to the comic team of The Raspberry Brothers to rip it to shreds with their Mystery Science Theater 3000-like comedic style.
If you are unfamiliar with the film, Top Gun revolves around Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise), a Naval fighter pilot who undergoes training at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School. Along with his partner, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), the two pilots train and eventually fight against foreign enemies. A corny romance also blossoms between Maverick and his instructor (Kelly McGillis). Between the love story, tension with a rival pilot (Val Kilmer) and a soundtrack which screams 80s, Top Gun is a movie that has delighted and disappointed audiences for decades.
The Raspberry Brothers will sit copilot with patrons of the Nitehawk Cinema this weekend, August 17 and August 18 both shows starting at midnight. As the films plays, the Bros. will offer their humorous commentary simultaneously and with a film this cheesy, there will be plenty of ammunition in their arsenal. Tom Cruise has had quite a career being in the spotlight. His films are usually average to good and the same can somewhat be said about Top Gun. It’s not a great film by any means but it does deliver some decent entertainment here and there. If anything else, Take My Breath Away is a lovely winning anthem.
