In the past few weeks, fans of the iconic sci-fi comedy franchise Ghostbusters have been treated to a bevy of on-set photos and tidbits from director Paul Feig’s Twitter page. The man is most best known for his raunchy comedy films 2010’s Bridesmaids, 2013’s The Heat and this year’s Spy. All films have a certain risqué flavor to them and each star Hollywood leading goofball Melissa McCarthy. The Ghostbusters reboot also stars McCarthy, along with fellow Bridesmaid Kristen Wiig and Saturday Night Live young bloods Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The film promises to provide a fresh take on the 31-year-old franchise while at the same time, honoring the memory of Ivan Reitman’s timeless 1984 film and its 1989 sequel, both starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.
Production images first surfaced a few weeks ago, showing Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon wearing cool, funky hipster-like clothing. There were also images of Kristen Wiig. After that, fans were treated to an image of a new a wardrobe hanger containing four functional and “improved” Ghostbusters jumpsuits, each suit is dark beige with orange trim, black boots and the iconic “No Ghost” arm patch. This particular photo sparked new hope for fans of the old films, who have been waiting patiently 26 years for a third film.
With the uniforms photo generating plenty of buzz, Paul Feig followed this up by showing off the new and “improved” Proton Packs, the main piece of Ghostbusting equipment. Feig continued to ride that wave by showing off the new Ecto-1, the classic vehicle from the first two films. However this Ecto-1 is made out of a different type of car, the retro/cool vibe is still very present. With the tools and the talent clearly documented, Feig presented fans and soon-to-be fans with an image of all four cast members (McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon, Jones) in their respective uniforms and gear, posing in front of the new Ecto-1. This image is without the doubt, the most exciting.
Also worth mentioning is Chris Hemsworth joining the cast as the Ghostbusters receptionist, taking over for Annie Potts in the original films. Andy Garcia has also signed on to play the Mayor of New York. Filming is currently underway in Boston and is expected to continue in New York in the coming months. Ghostbusters will be released July 22nd, 2016.
