Virginia

What is it about Oscar-winning actors who after they win the coveted award, they decide to star in mediocre films? Someone should have asked Jennifer Connelly this very question when she made the disappointing human drama Virginia, a film with two big stars but not a lot else.

Virginia revolves around a psychologically disturbed woman of the title’s name played by Connelly. She is a single mother struggling to make ends meet and provide a good life for her son. She is involved with the town sheriff played by a wooden Ed Harris. Their relationship is the main focus of the film and the negative repercussions it causes.

Not much can be said about Virginia. It tries to be quirky and interesting but sadly, fails. There are scenes containing sexual tension that seem promising but unfortunately, fall short. Connelly does however, manage to give a good performance. Since her Oscar win in 2002 for A Beautiful Mind, the thick-eye browed thespian has picked projects at random it seems. She usually relies on her good looks but also manages to play her roles with a certain intensity that is truly alluring.

The setting of Virginia is dull and everyone else in the cast but Connelly is lackluster. One should see Virginia only if they are a diehard Connelly fan. She is the film’s only saving grace and that’s a real shame because there was a lot of potential in this film.

DVD Bonus Features

There is only one bonus feature for Virginia, a making-of-featurette with Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts, Dustin Lance Black, Gus Van Sant and more.
