The 80s were a great time for television. Family sitcoms in particular dominated the many channels’ lineups. One such family was the Keatons and they had welcome home in the popular NBC show Family Ties. The program was your typical half hour romp with smart writing and strong performances. The show lasted a respectable seven seasons and for purposes of this review, emphasis shall be placed on the season six DVD.
Family Ties revolves around a pretty typical family in the 1980s. Elyse (Meredith Baxter) and Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) are former hippies who are now married. They have an eclectic group of kids in conservative Alex (Michael J. Fox), ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman), sarcastic Jennifer (Tina Yothers) and cute as a button youngin Andrew (Brian Bonsall). Every episode focuses on a particular problem and by the end of the episode is usually solved unless it’s a cliffhanger.
By its sixth season, Family Ties had been well-established. The plots of each episode varied from mediocre to somewhat gripping. One episode in particular dealt with divorce and all those affected by it. The real treat comes from the script and how the actors delivered their lines.
Michael J. Fox was the true star of Family Ties. His effortless charisma and brilliant comedic timing are what made him the sensation he is. His film roles came after he proved himself onFamily Ties. Though Fox became a household name during this time, the entire cast of the show deserve to share the spotlight since being together is what family is all about.
